What a Wonderful Weekend

I had such a great weekend that I was propping my eyes open with toothpicks last night to stay awake because it shouldn't be over so soon. Sigh. Darn adulthood.

On Saturday we went to the annual Comic Book Nerds United* BBQ and pool party at Madman Marco's house. It was a lovely, sunny, and HOT day in SoCal (85 in the shade) so I figured that we'd probably stay an hour or two before the sun got the best of me and I had to crawl home with my head wrapped in ice. Under that impression, I made plans with Miss Bliss for a crafty chick meet-up later in the evening. But as it turns out, the Nerds had their revenge and won this round. We were eating carne asada tacos and dodging blasts from the water cannon (note to self: don't leave Felicia in the pool alone) and talking shop and everything from why this episode of the IT Crowd left us screaming with laughter to why Ira Glass gives everyone a nerd boner to the latest storyline of Fables and all the latest industry gossip. Next thing I knew, it was 8:30pm. Oops! Luckily, Miss Bliss has the patience of a saint and doesn't hate me forever for flaking on her (at the last minute). Oh sheesh.

So we went home and had a late dinner and watched Be Kind Rewind. Which... was weird. Totally bizarre and not as slap-stick as I was expecting, but really good. And Jack Black's version of the Ghostbuster's theme song will get stuck in your head. Forever. "ghostbustaaaas."

Sunday afternoon, I got a Chance of a Lifetime to meet one of my favorite living artists and pick up some awesome artwork. But THAT is a whole post unto itself. I can't degrade the experience and cram it all in here.

After THAT, I took my treasures home and stored them safely before heading over to the Fair to see Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Had I paid better (or any) attention, I would have realized that the Vandals (!!) were opening the show. WHAT? Talk about a hideaway bonus! We were so excited. They, of course, were fantastic. And Warren Fitzgerald has never looked better. To pander to and please us, they played some of their hits (Anarchyburger! Oi to the World!) and also "Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen! So fantastic. And then the Plaid Boys from Boston came out and killed it. Seriously, SO GOOD.

Of course, I have complaints. Like where was the soundboard guy? Because you shouldn't have to sit quietly to hear the singer in an ampitheater. Also why are you so lame? To the stupid people who were in the row behind us who disturbed the entire show by trying to get some kids 15 rows up to sit down. Sorry to break it to you, bub, but this is a concert. People stand. Get over it. All the cup-throwing and yelling was making YOU look like a jerk. And when you pleaded your case to security and they said "standing isn't against the rules" and the people behind those dancing kids said that they didn't mind - that was your cue to shut up. ARGH!

But anyway.... we like the Dropkick Murphys, but it wasn't super important to see them, so we bailed a little bit early so we could get into the fair and get cheese on a stick (yay!) and chocolate dipped licorice - DELICIOUS! We didn't have time to see much of the fair, so we're planning a return trip. And THEN when we got home: new Venture Brothers!! Which is the best episode to date (free viewing online at Adult Swim!). It officially bypasses "Tag Sale You're It!" as my favorite. Which was no easy task. Hats off, Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick.

*This is just what I call it. They just call themselves "friends"
