Ok, Brad, you're it again... 'fess up ...
-----
24 hours before the start of school in the 9th grade, I decided to cut my hair. I had worn long hair, pulled into a loose ponytail for ages now... I needed something new. After all, this was a new town, a new school, and no one knew me here. I needed something to make an impression.
Unfortunately for me, my step-grandmother is a hairdresser and insisted that she be the one to cut my hair. When asked what I wanted, I told her "a little shorter than a bob cut, with more layers. Something kind of wispy around the face. Think of Keanu Reeves in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure only cleaned up and a little more feminine". She nodded, repeated back what I said and chopped away.
I walked out of the salon with not only a bowl cut - and honest to god bowl cut in 1991!! - but a 'tail' as well. Oh yeah, she thought it would be 'cute' to save a single braid of long hair at the nape of my neck. I choked back my tears until I got in the car and cried all the way home. With no time to find another salon, I had no option other than to wear it for the first day of school. I was crushed.
5th period PE class : "why is he here? This is the girls' class"
Oh my god. I came this close to fainting, I swear to you.
That night my mom walked a lady at Supercuts through a trim to try and fix it... which still looked terrible. But at least the tail was gone. Did I start wearing a super ton of make-up and skirts every day? Yes I did. Took 3 months for that awful cut to grow out.
bonus : a Bill & Ted meet Jay & Silent Bob movie
